We cannot let the boogeyman win,
cannot give up to the fear within,
cannot let hate overcome us
allow ignorance to control us.
In the pain we need to find our strength
and in sadness more than thoughts of revenge.
In our desperation and sorrow
find a hope for a brighter tomorrow.
Don’t let the madmen decide your ways
don’t listen to what the extremist says.
Don’t waste precious air and energy
on warring with some nameless enemy.
In the midst of the mayhem around us
we should look to love to surround us.
Whether from up above, or from fellow-man
the world is so much better when we walk hand in hand.
This poem was unfortunately inspired by the tragic events in Oslo and on Utöya, Norway on 22 July 2011.
It is also my entry for Thursday Poets’ Rally Week 49.
Yes indeed. It’s happening, slowly. One by one people are waking up to the fact that if we are to survive, it has to be as one race, the human race and it can only be through, love.
It seems so slow to happen but, it is happening, we just have to do our part and t his is beautiful addition towards it.
I feel as if I can never write enough on this topic… *sigh* Thank you again for reading and commenting. I agree with you completely!
We cannot let the boogeyman win,
cannot give up to the fear within,
cannot let hate overcome us
allow ignorance to control us.
love the spirits in it, divine lines, agreed, Happy Rally.
Thank you, Jingle. This one has a special meaning to me.
Unshakable faith is a true blessing. Nice piece.
Thank you! I am trying to keep the faith, my own way.
Such horrible events in Norway. I wish they taught peace in school instead of the history of wars. What a sad and foolish thing to kill for an idea.
I agree that the focus could be different, but it is also important to not forget the lessons we could have learned from history… Thank you so much for your kind words!
Hello!
I am happy to find, a poem that articulates what so many of us are thinking. Enough with the politics of power, there are lives and futures at stake irrespective of which country, what belief system etc…
Look forward to reading you.
Cheers
Padmavani
Thank you Padmavani! I am happy and amazed with all the positive feed-back on this poem. *smile*
Take good care of yourself as you process grief. It’s never easy but you’ve laid a good path back through this poem.
I realised I was getting so very, very angry about what had happened and how some people reacted to it… Once I had this down on paper (or screen as the case may be) it just felt so much easier, somehow. Thank you for reading! *smile*
Yes – surround oneself with Love! Hopefully, we can all make this world a better place, without retaliation and hatred.
It sounds like Utopia, but every little step towards that counts. Thank you!
A wonderfully uplifting poem that made me smile. Thank you – I love poetry that evokes such emotion in me. X
*blushing* Thank you Rebecca!

This is lovely, and how true! We should care about eachother more… Thanks for the read!
Thank you for reading! *smile*
A good reminder in times like this not to give in to dark thoughts and vengeance that may breed even more dark events. Nicely done.
The perpetrator of the massacre has actually been quoted as saying that it would be harder for him to be forgotten than to be hated… So I am doing my very best to forget about him and remember the innocent victims instead… *smile*
Beautiful, and I agree!
Thank you! Very happy to hear you agree!
Nice words none the less.
*blushing* Thank you!
This post is expressive and uplifting. There will always be threats on which to dwell with obsessive gloom and doom, but there is always hope to lift our eyes to one another and to God.
Thank you Donna! *smile*
Another beautiful view of your lovely heart and deep compassion.
Thank you! I don’t know if I’m able to live up to such high praise, but I do try. *smile*
Whether from up above, or from fellow-man
the world is so much better when we walk hand in hand.
AMEN to this! I agree ~~
Thank you very much!
I also wish that peace and love would reign in the hearts of mankind, instead of war and merciless killing of the innocent. Your post inspired me. 🙂
Thank you Irene! *smile*
Beautiful message I really wish this vision of peace would come true
We can only do our small individual piece to move it a little bit closer to reality… Who was the clever guy who said that each journey of a thousand steps starts with just one?
this is one great work 🙂
Thank you! I would like to hope that the sentiment remains, even as time passes since the horrible event that inspired it…
This is such a beautifully written poem and so very inspiring. Love is the only way and you’ve captured that well here. A great piece 🙂
*blushing* Thank you! I just wish it wouldn’t stay at mere words on a blog…
What a sweet, sweet, sweet poem. I usually write sad poems, because I write when I’m upset – and I find uplifting, happy poems like this the hardest to write. So definitely cudos to you! A great message as well, I hope one day that as a race we’ll be able to put aside our difference. Slowly, I think the world is really becoming a world-wide community – the large stretches of land and seas no longer seem quite so far away. maybe that’s the key to peace!
Great work!
I like that thought, actually… Distances have become smaller and just as discovering more about other cultures or societies is now easier…. *hmm… wandering off to write something* Thank you for reading! *smile*
What beautiful words CC. A wonderfully penned message so many need to take to heart. It’s a shame that it seems to take these world tragedies upon tragedies upon tragedies for it to happen, but we I think we are (excruciatingly) slowly getting to a better place as humankind.
We call ourselves an evolved race… Well, for an evolved race we are pretty stupid, aren’t we? *smile*
Another fantastic poem. Truly heartfelt. Sending love from California
I keep hearing Beatles ‘All we need is love…’ in my head. They weren’t half dumb, those boys.
I forget who said this, and, I don’t now if is word for word, but…
“if you go out to seek revenge, then, dig two graves.”
Thank you for reminding us in this lovely piece.
I too recognise the quote, but can’t remember where it’s from… It is very true, though… Revenge is powerful and extremely infectious. Thank you for reading and commenting.
*bows to words of wisdom* Thank you! *big smile*
Loved it! This was utterly a feast in sharp cuts of profoundness!
*sharpens claws of profoundness for future feats* Thank you very much! *smile*
Your words speak the truth. Very nice write!
Thank you very, very much! *smiling widely*
This is brillantly beautiful. Very honest, and great words to abide by.
Thank you ever so much!
nice write and very uplifting…I like the way you worked in the pics
Thank you! I wasn’t sure about the pictures at first, but sometimes things just fall into place… *blushing*
Wonderful poem. I commend you for finding the inspiration within those events to create something beautiful.
Some things we just cannot let get us down or we will break… And there was so much anger around after this event, completely understandable, but it just felt… Wrong, somehow… *smile*
