We cannot let the boogeyman win,
cannot give up to the fear within,
cannot let hate overcome us
allow ignorance to control us.
In the pain we need to find our strength
and in sadness more than thoughts of revenge.
In our desperation and sorrow
find a hope for a brighter tomorrow.
Don’t let the madmen decide your ways
don’t listen to what the extremist says.
Don’t waste precious air and energy
on warring with some nameless enemy.
In the midst of the mayhem around us
we should look to love to surround us.
Whether from up above, or from fellow-man
the world is so much better when we walk hand in hand.
This poem was unfortunately inspired by the tragic events in Oslo and on Utöya, Norway on 22 July 2011.
It is also my entry for Thursday Poets’ Rally Week 49.
