Here is my final point. About drugs, about alcohol, about pornography and smoking and everything else. What business is it of yours what I do, read, buy, see, say, think, who I fuck, what I take into my body – as long as I do not harm another human being on this planet?
Shouldn’t we all just try to get along?
Be more… Understanding?
Couldn’t we all just live and let live?
Why fight about whose God is the best?
Whose political party is less likely to screw us over?
Whose pronunciation of the word tomato is correct?
What is right? What is wrong?
Do I even care?
Should I listen? Must I pray?
Why should I live my life as you see fit?
Show some respect!
I have only one life… This is it!
And it’s mine!
If we could all just abide by basic human principles…
Can’t we all just get along?
There must be rules, guidelines for sure,
but must there be etiquette,
Killing – wrong!
Intentionally hurting others – wrong!
Lying – still wrong!
of those less fortunate…
Of those weaker…
If I spend my time not hurting anyone,
if I spend my time with respect,
if I spend my time not hating,
If I just live…
If I just… Listen…
If I just… Smile…
That we’re all the same
Would that be so wrong?
I’m not even sure if this can be called poetry, but it is what came out of d’Verse Poets Pub and their prompt Poetics – It’s Quotable, which immediately got me thinking of long gone, brilliant American comedian Bill Hicks. I was introduced to Bill Hicks by someone who was – and still is – very dear to me, at a point in my life where I didn’t quite know where I was going. I suppose I still don’t, but at least I am now many laughs and some wonderful quotes richer.
After all that, I’ve done a re-write of all this, something far less ranting and perhaps a bit more poem-ishy… You can find that here.
