Raw concrete underpass
Roar of trains passing overhead
Restless structure at the rumble
Cool to the touch, as sound wakes the dead.
Shading from the beating sun
Shadows and echos bouncing off
Scars of graffiti on polished old cement
Covering blue paint, peeling off
Firm ground above, below and around
Fingers caress hard surface
Feeling imperfection in it
Crimson red, blue, white and greys
In a raw concrete underpass.
Today’s prompt, Day 24 for NaPoWriMo 2014, asked us to write a whole poem about structures and masonry. Brand new territory to me, but on my lunch walk I took the above photo in an underpass close to home. I’ve always had a huge fear of underpasses, especially the ones with rail tracks over… The sound in the tunnel as the train passes was the stuff of my nightmares as a child, and still chills me today. Hope you enjoyed!
