The whisper of a smile
on your lips
as I pass by
and I know that
you’re away
once again.
How I wish that I could see
where you got to
when you flee
as you leave this world
behind
for your daydreaming pretend.
I would give
anything I own
to be there,
where you have gone
when that
whisper of a smile
touches your lips.
Mona Lisa
would have wept
none of her mystery
be kept
at the comparison
of her smile with yours.
The whisper of a smile
on your lips
as I pass by
and I know that
you’re away
once again.
How I wish that I could see
where you got to
when you flee
as you leave this world
behind
for a daydreaming pretend.
There’s always a longing to know what hides behind a loved one’s secret smile. Is she/he missing someone else? Is there a joke that I’ve somehow missed? For this prompt on Poetry Jam, Daydream Believers, I decided to place myself in the observer’s seat, actually a man who’s madly in love with the woman he’s observing, and let her secret smile while daydreaming frustrate him. The kind of off-beat rhythm of the scribble can be blamed on the Monkees, though I know I didn’t follow through with a full on lyrics.
This poem really resonates with me. You have really captured what I think is a universal feeling of someone coming upon another who is in the midst of a daydream and written it beautifully. And yes, if it is someone one loves, one does wonder where the other’s mind is……and then again sometimes I encounter my granddaughter joyfully acting OUT her daydream, and I KNOW just where her mind is. Glad you found your way back to Poetry Jam, and hope we will see you often.
Thank you, Mary. I have been quite disconnected from writing at all lately, but I hope to come back, both with the writing and the visiting of fantastic sites such as Poetry Jam! And I am glad you liked it!
Great poem and I love the picture.
The picture is called Donnafugata by Antonio Merini (found it on Pinterest), so I can’t take credit for that one. Thank you for reading and commenting! *smile*
Wonderful!!! I love the idea of being able to glimpse into others daydreams…what an interesting time that would be!!
Hahaha… Yes, but it would also be just a bit scary, I think! 🙂
Yeah, it could be! 🙂
nice…love how you can tell…and you often can if you know them…and that that smile lets you know as well they are enjoying it…would be cool to peak in for sure…
Thank you, Brian. I’m always happy to see you visit!
This is wonderful!!!! One of my favorites among so many great poems this week.
*blushing* Thank you, Helen! It feels good to be back!
I love the concept, have sure felt that I wish I could go where someone else goes when he or she is clearly “away” in a dream world. The perspective switch here, outside the dreaming, is cool.
Thank you very much, Victoria! So happy you took the time to come visit and comment on this scribble of mine! *smile*
ah that Mona Lisa smile…
You’ve captured the voice of this lovestruck man so well! I actually am a bit glad no one can peek into my daydreams, what they would see might scare them half to death! Thanks so much for linking this up with us at Poetry Jam this week.
